" Bon soir. Je me parle Francais mais, j'ecris cet hommage en anglais parce que je suis americaine.
My husband and I were in France for 7 days, touring Le Rhone et La Saone regions. I had been looking for a church to attend Mass, and although I went to many churches, there was no Mass being said when I was there.
On the morning of 21 July, in Tournus, we were in the area of the Abby, and I noticed that the church was open, and a morning Mass seemed to be getting ready to be said. So we went in. Little did I know that it was a Requiem Mass. For Georgette.

We stayed for the entire service. My husband and I are both professional musicians, and we were very taken by the processional song from Dr. Zhivago, Lara's Theme, sung in French. I love French chanson and I sing French songs a lot. We also loved the personal touch of Georgette's nephew? playing the Ave Maria on saxophone, and the recessional of Autumn Leaves.
The celebrant also did a wonderful job with the service. I could understand a bit of what he said, but not everything! Still, we could tell that Georgette was loved and that she will be truly missed. Given her age at her death, she must have had an increibly interesting life, and seeing how France must have changed from her youth through modern times.
What I thought was Communion, was actually the final sending of Georgette, and I just took the aspergillum and sprinkled holy water on Georgette's casket.
It was a great honor and privilege, for me, a fellow Roman Catholic, to help send off Georgette, another fellow Roman Catholic and totally unknown to me until that day...
I did ask my husband, "Do you think that the congregants wondered who the stranger was who came up to sprinkle Holy Water/" He, replied, "Of course they did."
I took the liberty of taking a picture of the hearse and the name of the funeral director. Then I researched the site.
Please do accept our heartfelt condolences and may God, in his great mercy, give you comfort during this sad time.
Avec toute notre sympathie,
Drs Marian & Paul Schultz
